The Minister for Education and Primary and Mass Education, ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has announced that prompt measures will be taken to address the residential hall crisis at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Speaking as the chief guest at the orientation programme for the 2025-26 academic year today, the minister highlighted the scarcity of seats in the university’s residential halls.
He said accommodation difficulties hinder the academic progress of students and affirmed that resolving these issues is a priority.
During his address, the minister referred to the “tragic incident” that occurred at the university, noting that while BUET students are exceptionally talented, they can sometimes be led astray. To preserve the memory of that event, he said he would request the prime minister to name a residential hall after Abrar Fahad.
In addition to housing reforms, Milon emphasised the need to elevate research standards. He announced that “Research Grants” would be increased and acknowledged that many university laboratories currently utilise outdated equipment.
He pledged that necessary steps would be taken to modernise these facilities to ensure they meet international standards.
The orientation programme was chaired by the BUET Vice-Chancellor Eqramul Hoque.
The Prime Minister’s Education Advisor Mahdi Amin, and the BUET Pro-VC Abdul Hasib Chowdhury were also in attendance as special guests.
