Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Engineer Mohammad Iqbal has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former acting President of Bangladesh, former Speaker of the National Parliament, veteran lawyer and senior politician Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar.
Sircar, a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s Language Movement, died on Sunday (12 July 2026), DUET said in a press release.
In a condolence message, Professor Dr Engineer Mohammad Iqbal said Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar was an experienced, honest and dedicated figure in Bangladesh’s politics who served as acting President and Speaker of the National Parliament with integrity, wisdom and responsibility during his long political career.
The Vice-Chancellor said Sircar also served in several important government positions, including Education Minister, State Minister for Land, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and State Minister for Public Works and Urban Development.
He said Sircar worked for the welfare of the country and its people while upholding honesty, wisdom and democratic values throughout his political and professional life.
The Vice-Chancellor added that Sircar’s humility, knowledge, courtesy and sincerity earned respect across society, and his death was an irreparable loss for the nation, which had lost a patriotic, wise and guardian-like political figure.
He said the country would remember Sircar’s contributions to strengthening democratic institutions, developing parliamentary culture and promoting welfare-oriented governance, including his role in struggles for democracy, voting rights and people’s fundamental rights.
Professor Dr Engineer Mohammad Iqbal prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed condolences to Sircar’s family members, relatives, colleagues, well-wishers and admirers.
