Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem has declined an offer from the government for assigning a gunman to ensure his security.
Simultaneously, Kayem has demanded security assurances for people from all walks of life.
In a statement on Monday night, Kayem said, “Recently, the government decided to provide gunmen for the security of student leadership of the July revolution, leaders of various political parties, and media personalities.
“I was also informed by the government in this regard. I have decided not to accept this offer.”
The statement further read, “After the fall of the killer Hasina through the collective resistance of students and the public, people expected a visible and fair change in the country’s overall security system.
“But in reality, public security is repeatedly being compromised due to the lack of effective role by law enforcement agencies, and the direct and indirect support of fascist forces in various departments.”
He also remarked that if the law enforcement agencies were made “effective and active” and the terrorists were brought under “exemplary punishment by law,” there would not be so much concern about security today.
Kayem said, “In this context, the question rather needs to be asked: why has that expectation not been fulfilled yet?”
The Ducsu VP then pointed out, “On one hand, top terrorists roam freely on bail, people like Osman Hadi are martyred at their hands, and yet the killers remain out of reach. On the other hand, gunmen are being offered for personal security.
“I am hesitant to accept this reality.”
He concluded, “Undoubtedly, we all need security. But if that security is limited only to some individuals or groups, then it is not fair. Our demand is to build a safe and just Bangladesh for all the people of the country.
“The students and people of the country still face insecurity. I currently do not consider it right to accept gunmen merely for personal security.”
