A group of second-year students from Dhaka University (DU) celebrated Independence and National Day through a cultural programme featuring songs and poetry on Thursday.
The event, titled “Kobita o Gane Swadhinata” (Independence in Poetry and Song), was held at Sanjeeb Chattar in the university’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
According to the organisers, the initiative was taken to highlight the significance and importance of the day through a combination of music, poetry, and culture.
They noted that they moved forward with the programme as there were no significant celebrations organised by the university administration or active student organisations.
While the event was open to all to reflect the spirit of independence and Bengali cultural heritage, participants engaged in various creative activities including singing, poetry recitation, and the reading of letters.
Mubashshir Mahmud Nibir, one of the organisers, stated that upon arriving at the campus, they found a lack of notable celebratory events by the administration or student groups.
He remarked that while the university administration maintains certain formal annual programmes, there were no open arrangements visible that embraced cultural heritage.
“Seeing this, we friends decided to organise an event ourselves the following day,” Nibir said. He added that the initiative was successfully implemented following support from both senior and junior students of the university.
