The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have started the process of taking legal and administrative action against teachers allegedly involved in attempts to bring back fugitive convict Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh and restore the activities of the Awami League.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university authorities said action would be taken against those involved in such activities in line with DU rules and regulations as well as the existing laws of the country.
“The process of taking action has already begun,” the statement said.
The university said it had taken note of recent media reports claiming that 404 teachers from 22 universities were involved in efforts to bring back Sheikh Hasina and reactivate the political party.
Expressing “deep concern” over the matter, the DU authorities said such activities were a violation of existing laws and judicial decisions and could be considered anti-state in nature.
The university said attempts were being made through such activities to create instability, spread confusion and challenge state institutions and the constitutional framework.
DU said it respects freedom of thought, the rule of law, democratic values and constitutional principles, but added that freedom of expression cannot be used as a cover for unlawful activities or actions aimed at destabilising the university or the country.
The authorities said involvement of university teachers in such activities was inconsistent with their professional dignity, ethical responsibilities and the values of the institution.
According to the statement, the alleged activities fall under misconduct and moral offences as defined in Section 56(3) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973, Section 45(3) of the First Statutes of Dhaka University, and Rule 13 of Chapter 20 of the Dhaka University Ordinance and Regulations.
Under the relevant rules, DU can take disciplinary actions, including compulsory retirement, removal from service or dismissal, against those found guilty.
The university reiterated its “zero-tolerance” policy towards any activities that undermine the country’s sovereignty, Constitution, laws, judicial decisions and the dignity of the institution.
“No one will be exempt from accountability for violating the law or university regulations, regardless of their identity or position,” the statement said.
DU urged teachers, students, officials, employees and other stakeholders to act responsibly, follow the law and help maintain peace, stability and a democratic environment in the country.
