Heavy rain for nearly two hours from early Friday left several parts of Dhaka waterlogged, disrupting movement, although the impact was eased by lighter traffic due to the public holiday.
The rain started shortly after 5am and continued until just before 7am.
Roads in areas including Malibagh, Mouchak, Moghbazar, Green Road, Karwan Bazar, Panthapath, Jigatala, Dhanmondi, West Tejturi Bazar, West Shewrapara, Mirpur-10, Kazipara and Madhubagh were inundated.
Traffic was relatively thin because of the holiday, limiting overall disruption.
Water remained on many roads even after 10:30am.
Shariful Islam, travelling from Badda to Mouchak, said around 10:00am that the stretch from Malibagh Railgate to Mouchak was still flooded.
He said he had to wade through knee-deep water after getting off a bus at the Railgate to reach his destination.
Commuters reported similar conditions elsewhere, with water in some places reaching the footrests of rickshaws.
A shortage of buses was also reported due to the rain and waterlogging, forcing many to rely on rickshaws or walk.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said rain is likely to continue in parts of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 48 hours, with some areas expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The rainfall has brought relief from a heatwave that persisted for more than a week.
