The widely acclaimed stage production Domer Madar is approaching its 80th performance after a long journey of artistic perseverance. Written by Sadhana Ahmed, directed by Dr Irene Parveen Lopa and produced by Natyam Repertory, the play has earned recognition at home and abroad.
Marking the milestone, organisers have announced ‘Domer Madar Theatre Festival: Journey to the 80th Show’. They credit audiences as their sole source of strength behind the production’s continued success.
The three-day festival will run from May 6 to May 8, 2026, featuring five performances. The 76th show will be staged on May 6 at 7:15 pm, followed by the 77th and 78th shows on May 7 at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm respectively.
The 79th and 80th shows will be held on May 8 at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. All performances will take place at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
Folk performance traditions remain a vital part of Bengal’s thousand-year-old cultural heritage. One such tradition, Madar Pirer Adhyan, continues to be sung across different regions of Bangladesh.
The story of Domer Madar revolves around a community of devotees of Madar Pir, based on a partially true incident. While the playwright uses a folk framework, the director departs from traditional staging and acting styles.
The play explores a deeper philosophical truth about human existence. It reflects the idea of devotion to the unseen divine and the symbolic union between the individual soul and the supreme.
The cast includes Shishir Rahman, Parveen Akhtar Paru, Lita Khan, Subhashish Dutta Tanmoy, Shakil Ahmed, Amitabh Rajib, Monohar Chandra Das, Md Shariful Islam Mamun, and Beauty. Musicians include Parimal Majumdar, Shishir Rahman and Bimal Das. Set and lighting design is by Junayed Yusuf, with music direction by Parimal Majumdar. Musical composition and application are handled by Shishir Rahman.
