Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has installed a total of 812 LED lights of 50-watt capacity at the general graveyard beside the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Cemetery to improve security and the overall environment.
The newly installed lights were formally switched on in the evening after completion of the installation work by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz.
He said the vast , covering about 56 acres, had long suffered from inadequate lighting, which led to various criminal activities after dusk. The lack of lighting also caused serious difficulties for nighttime burials and for visitors coming to pay respects.
“We have completed the lighting work nearly two months ahead of schedule. From now on, people will be able to visit the graveyard safely and without disruption both during the day and at night,” he said.
The DNCC administrator also said the general graveyard, located next to the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Cemetery, contains around 72,000 graves. Due to the absence of lighting, it had been difficult to conduct burial activities at night, and there were complaints of crimes including drug-related activities and snatching around the graveyard. He expressed hope that the newly installed LED lights would significantly reduce these problems.
According to DNCC sources, the LED lights will be operated through modern time sensors and will automatically switch on and off at scheduled times, ensuring energy efficiency and more effective management.
The DNCC administration said the lighting project would not only ensure security at the graveyard but also play an important role in creating a disciplined, dignified and safe environment.
