The Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) carried out extensive eviction drives across the city on Sunday, fining Tk3.33 lakh and sentencing nine individuals to various terms of imprisonment.
The daylong drives targeted illegal encroachments on footpaths and roads, with goods seized, fines collected, and legal actions taken against violators, according to Arifa Akhtar Preeti, Assistant Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of DMP.
In the Lalbagh Division, several establishments and one individual were fined Tk 17,000 during operations in the North South Road, Bangshal, and Nayabazar areas under the Kotwali Traffic Zone. Three people were arrested, and a case was filed under the Road Transport Act, 2018. The arrestees were sent to court.
A special drive in the Traffic Wari Division was carried out in the Jurain and Shyampur areas under the Jatrabari zone, where illegal roadside shops were evicted. Eleven traders were fined a total of Tk 47,500, and others were issued warnings.
In the Traffic Ramna Division, an operation was conducted from New Market Crossing to Dhaka College to clear footpaths. During the drive, 52 video cases and 15 on-the-spot cases were filed against illegally parked motorcycles. A mobile court also imposed fines amounting to Tk 82,000.
Meanwhile, in the Shah Ali area, the Traffic Mirpur Division fined 17 shops a total of Tk 80,000 and issued warnings to other shops during a similar drive.
In the Traffic Motijheel Division, a drive was conducted from Malibagh Rail Gate to Rampura Bridge, where one person was arrested, and Tk 67,000 in fines was realised from shops and other offenders.
The Traffic Tejgaon Division also conducted drives in areas adjacent to Agargaon IDB Bhaban and Nirban Bhaban, fining six shops Tk14,000 and issuing instructions to traders.
In the Traffic Gulshan Division, four shops were fined a total of Tk 20,500 for illegally occupying footpaths in the Mohakhali and Gulshan-2 areas.
Additionally, the Traffic Uttara Division arrested five individuals and fined another five a total of Tk 5,000 during drives targeting illegal encroachment on footpaths.
DMP officials confirmed that such eviction drives would continue to ensure smooth pedestrian movement and maintain discipline on city roads.
