Director Dipankar Dipon has praised the Eid release ‘Roid’ in a lengthy social media post, outlining what he described as three important lessons from the film that he believes are valuable not only for a single production but for the Bangladeshi film industry as a whole.
The ‘Dhaka Attack’ filmmaker began by saying that he generally avoids publicly reviewing local films out of professional courtesy towards fellow filmmakers. However, he said ‘Roid’ had compelled him to break that practice.
Dipon first commended director Mejbaur Rahman Sumon for his approach to filmmaking. According to him, many filmmakers become preoccupied with matters outside filmmaking itself, leaving less focus on the craft. He said Sumon stood apart because, when making a film, his complete attention remained on the story and its execution. Dipon described ‘Roid’ as the result of that dedication.
He also praised actress Nazifa Tushi’s performance, saying an actress’s true appeal lies not in looking glamorous on screen but in how fully she embodies her character.
Referring to Tushi’s portrayal of Sadu’s wife in ‘Roid’, Dipon wrote that many actresses wish to maintain their glamorous image regardless of the role, something he has encountered himself as a director. He said Tushi’s performance demonstrated that the more deeply an actor becomes immersed in a character, the greater their acceptance and screen presence become in the eyes of audiences.
In the final part of his post, Dipon shared his thoughts on filmmaking, arguing that sincerity and credibility in storytelling are more important than relying on songs, action sequences, picturesque locations or excessive commercial elements to attract audiences. He said honest filmmaking ultimately resonates more deeply with viewers.
The filmmaker also reflected on his own work, acknowledging that directors, producers and stars are aware of these principles but often overlook or forget them. He concluded that ‘Roid’ had reminded him of those fundamental truths.
