A group of miscreants blocked the Dhaka–Barishal highway in Kalkini of Madaripur by placing tree trunks on the road.
The incident took place early Sunday morning on the Gopalpur section of the road in the Kalkini municipality area. As a result, traffic on this route remained suspended for about four hours.
Eyewitnesses said that at dawn, a group of people blocked the road and held a protest march by placing tree trunks at various points and burning tyres.
During this time, passengers and drivers suffered as traffic on the Dhaka–Barishal highway came to a halt. Upon receiving the news, the Fire Service and Highway Police removed the trees from the road and restored normal traffic.
Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police Jahangir Alam said, “A group of miscreants blocked the Dhaka–Barishal highway by placing several large trees on the road. After receiving the information, members of the law enforcement agencies came and removed the trees from the highway.”
Assuring that those involved in the incident would be identified and brought under the law, he said that traffic has now been normalised.
