Lawyers of the Dhaka Bar Association have decided that no member of the bar will conduct the defence for the accused in the case filed over the rape and murder of seven-year-old Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Dhaka.
The decision came on Friday during a virtual meeting of the executive committee of the Dhaka Bar Association, taken unanimously, reports BSS.
General Secretary of the association, Kalam Khan, told the media, “The executive committee has unanimously decided that no Dhaka Bar lawyer will defend the accused in the Ramisa murder case.”
According to case documents, the victim Ramisa Akter was a second-grade student of Popular Model High School. On May 19 at around 9:30am, she left her home when accused Swapna Akter allegedly lured her into her flat room.
At around 10:30am the same day, when her parents started searching for her on her way to school, they found her shoes in front of the accused’s room.
After repeated knocking with no response, her parents and other residents broke open the door and entered the room. They found Ramisa Akter’s beheaded body on the bedroom floor and her head inside a large bucket in the room.
The accused Swapna Akter was found standing at the scene. When questioned, she said her husband, accused Md Sohail Rana,30, confined Ramisa in the bathroom, raped her and then killed her by slitting her throat.
Later, Sohail Rana allegedly escaped by cutting the window grill. Pallabi Police Station said they first arrested Swapna Akter for assisting in the killing.
Based on her statement, police later arrested the main accused Sohail Rana from the Fatullah area of Narayanganj in a raid.
Both accused later gave confessional statements in court admitting their involvement in the crime.
