A Dhaka court on Sunday sent two women to jail in a six-month-old Anti-Terrorism Act case after they were detained while allegedly going to Dhanmondi 32 to pay tribute on the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain rejected their bail petitions and ordered that they be sent to jail.
SI Abul Bashar of the prosecution department confirmed the development.
The two women, identified as Suma Baral and Jannat, were produced before the court by investigation officer Abu Solaiman Sumon, who sought their detention in jail.
Lawyers Liton Mia and Gazi Faisal Islam sought bail for Suma and Jannat respectively. Following a hearing, the court rejected their bail petitions.
Police said the two women were detained on Saturday night when they allegedly went to Dhanmondi 32 to pay tribute. They were subsequently shown arrested in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed in February.
According to the case documents, police conducted a raid on Dhanmondi Road No 3 early on 27 February after receiving information that several members of the banned Mohila Awami League had gathered there to bring out a procession.
Police detained several people at the scene, while others fled, the documents said.
The FIR alleged that those detained had gathered to carry out anti-government activities and conspire against the state and were preparing to bring out a procession.
An Anti-Terrorism Act case was later filed over the incident.
The latest arrests came months after the case was filed, with police linking the two women to the case after detaining them at Dhanmondi 32.
