At least 10 vehicles were involved in separate accidents on the Dhaka–Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj due to dense fog.
Among them, seven vehicles, including passenger buses and trucks, were badly mangled. At least 34 people, including drivers, were injured.
Fire service rescue teams conducted operations and sent the injured to Srinagar Health Complex, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
The accidents occurred at different times on Thursday night.
Among them, around 2am, while climbing the Chhanbari Bridge in Srinagar, a southbound passenger bus of Golden Line Paribahan was hit from behind by a vehicle of Saad Abdullah Paribahan. Losing control, the moving bus then rammed into a truck in front of it.
At that moment, another passenger bus coming from behind also collided, leaving 17 passengers, including drivers of four vehicles, injured.
One bus driver became trapped inside the crushed front portion of the bus. Upon receiving the information, a Fire Service team launched a rescue operation. Initially, they rescued the injured and sent them to hospitals.
Later, after one and a half hours of effort, the trapped driver was freed by cutting open the front portion of the bus. He was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Additionally, around 1am at the same spot, a passenger bus hit a moving truck from behind, causing the front portion of the bus to break and lodge into the rear of the truck. Five people were injured in that incident.
Due to these accidents, long traffic congestion developed on the main lane of the expressway. Later, traffic was diverted under the Chhanbari Bridge instead of over it as an alternative route, which normalised the situation.
Earlier, around 9:30pm, at the Bezgaon bus stand area of Srinagar on the expressway, a Mawa-bound speeding passenger bus was hit from behind by another bus. The front portion of one bus was shattered, injuring at least 12 people.
Later, around 4:30am, near the Uttar Medeni Mondol Minar Mosque in Louhajang, a truck collided with a covered van while the van was travelling from Keraniganj to Chuadanga carrying goods of the Akij company. The driver became trapped inside the vehicle and was later rescued.
Srinagar Fire Service Station Officer Dewan Azad Hossain said several road accidents occurred throughout the night due to extremely dense fog. He said that as soon as information was received, teams rushed to the scene, rescued the injured, and sent them to hospitals for immediate treatment.
