Shahidul Islam Shipu, a death-row convict in the murder case of former Awami League lawmaker Ahsanullah Master, died on Sunday morning after falling ill at Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur.

Prison authorities, said Shipu, 54, was first taken to the prison hospital when his condition suddenly deteriorated. As his health worsened, he was transferred to Shahid Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Shipu was a resident of the Gopalpur area in Tongi of Gazipur Metropolitan City.

Jailer Md Abul Hossain said Shipu had been suffering from multiple long-term complications, including hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. He said one of Shipu’s legs had earlier been amputated due to diabetes-related complications and that he had been receiving regular treatment.

After completing the necessary legal procedures, Shipu’s body was handed over to his family, the jailer said.

Ahsanullah Master, then a member of parliament, was killed in an attack on 7 May, 2004, at the MA Majid Mia High School field in Noagaon, Tongi, Gazipur.

Following the trial, the court sentenced Shahidul Islam Shipu to death, and he had been in prison as a condemned convict for many years.
