The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to ensure that businesses do not face unnecessary harassment during the implementation of its initiative to strengthen the deduction, deposit, monitoring and verification of source tax.
In a statement issued on Monday, the DCCI welcomed the NBR initiative, saying that its proper implementation would contribute positively to overall revenue collection and the expansion of the country’s tax net.
However, the chamber expressed concern that businesses already complying with tax regulations should not be subjected to undue difficulties during the enforcement process.
It also called on the revenue authority to ensure fair treatment for businesses that have yet to achieve full compliance by providing them with adequate time and opportunities to meet the required standards.
The DCCI said greater use of automation and digital systems in revenue management is essential to help the government achieve its revenue collection targets and broaden the tax base.
According to the chamber, wider adoption of digital systems would also help reduce unnecessary hardships faced by the private sector.
The DCCI said revenue collection and the creation of a business-friendly environment are not mutually exclusive and can be achieved simultaneously.
It added that continued constructive dialogue between the NBR and the business community, alongside coordinated efforts by the government and private sector, is essential to strengthening discipline in tax management across all sectors of the economy.
