Bruce Wayne’s first adventure of 2026 will pit Batman against a new villain who puts a fresh spin on a classic foe. Arriving on January 7, ‘Batman #5’ introduces Lady Death Man, a lethal assassin linked to long-time villain Lord Death Man. She is a skilled sword fighter with the kanji for death carved into her face.

Batman has recently faced the Minotaur, a criminal strategist aiming to unite Gotham’s underworld, while also investigating a powerful artefact called the Crown of Storms. That search draws the attention of Lady Death Man. The issue also features the motorcycle-riding 000 Gang as they target Dr Annika Zeller, creator of the Crown of Storms, adding two new threats to Batman lore as 2026 begins.

Death Man, later known as Lord Death Man, first appeared in 1940. Known for faking his death and later gaining the ability to resurrect himself, he became a recurring antagonist in Jiro Kuwata’s Japanese Batman manga and returned to DC continuity through Grant Morrison’s Batman Inc. in 2012. Lord Death Man’s profile has grown since then, partly through his protégé Flatline, an enemy and love interest of Damian Wayne who absorbs the skills of those who die near her.

It is not yet clear how Lady Death Man connects to either character. Comics often introduce gender-flipped versions of villains with the prefix Lady, and her name may be a tongue-in-cheek nod to the trope. Her link to Lord Death Man, whether marital or otherwise, remains a mystery. Batman Volume 4 continues to expand the rogues’ gallery and push the Dark Knight into conflict with an increasingly unified underworld.

Batman #5 is released on January 7, 2026 by DC Comics.
