Daffodil International University has taken a major step toward renewable energy and sustainable development by signing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Paramount Group for a 3.4-megawatt solar power project.
The initiative aims to expand the use of green energy on the university’s permanent campus at Daffodil Smart City, says a press release.
The project, implemented under an OPEX model, allows the university to utilise solar power without upfront investment while ensuring long-term cost stability.
Officials estimate it will cut 3,500 to 4,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually—equivalent to planting around 60,000 trees.
The system requires no water usage and produces no harmful gas emissions, making it fully environmentally sustainable.
Net metering facilities will allow surplus electricity to be supplied to the national grid in exchange for credits, further lowering the university’s electricity costs.
The project will also reduce dependence on imported fuel and contribute to foreign currency savings.
The signing ceremony at Daffodil Smart City was attended by Paramount Group Chairman Shakhawat Hossain, Daffodil Board of Trustees Chairman Md Sabur Khan, Vice Chancellor Professor M R Kabir, Pro-Vice Chancellor Mohammad Masum Iqbal, Treasurer Hamidul Haque Khan, Registrar Mohammad Nadir Bin Ali, Board member Mohammad Emran Hossain, and senior faculty and officials.
Shakhawat Hossain said, “This partnership with Daffodil International University is a matter of great pride. Investing in renewable energy is not just business; it is social responsibility.”
“Through this project, we aim to contribute to environmental protection, energy conservation, and sustainable development. Daffodil will be the first university in Bangladesh to implement cutting-edge solar technology, setting a benchmark for the education and energy sectors” he added.
Md Sabur Khan, chairman of the university’s board, added, “Sustainable development is no longer optional; it is essential. This solar project reflects our vision of combining education, technology, and environmental responsibility. It will create a green campus and nurture a responsible future generation.”
He added “The initiative will help address Bangladesh’s energy challenges and encourage further investment in renewable energy by both government and private sectors. Ultimately, it benefits the nation as a whole.”
Led by Professor M Shamsul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the project establishes a model for effective and sustainable collaboration between Daffodil International University and Paramount Group.
University authorities highlighted that beyond energy savings, the project will serve as a practical learning platform for students, enabling hands-on experience with renewable technologies and supporting research in sustainable energy solutions.
Officials emphasised that the initiative is more than a contractual agreement—it represents a critical step toward a sustainable, environmentally responsible, and self-reliant future for Bangladesh.
