Cyclone Montha, which made landfall on Tuesday around 7pm as a “severe cyclonic storm”, has gradually weakened over coastal Andhra Pradesh.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to maintain its intensity as a cyclonic storm for the next six hours before weakening further into a deep depression.
It is expected to move northeastwards across the East Central Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours.
In Odisha, a red alert has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapathi, and Ganjam districts, while most other districts remain under yellow alert.
In Telangana, red alerts have been sounded for Mulugu, Khammam, and B Kothagudem districts. An orange alert has also been issued for Hanamkonda, Nalgonda, Mancherial, Peddapalle, and Suryapet, warning of heavy rainfall.
In Andhra Pradesh, most areas are under red and orange alert, with heavy rain expected in Prakasam, Nellore, Guntur, Elluru, Tirupathi, East Godavari, and Krishna districts.
The IMD has forecast torrential downpours over West and East Madhya Pradesh until October 30. Heavy rain is also likely in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on October 29 and 30, while Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha are expected to see rain till October 31. Jharkhand may experience heavy showers on October 29 and 31, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 30 and November 1.
Madhya Maharashtra is set to receive heavy rainfall on October 29, while the Gujarat region may see rain until October 31. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph are expected over the region during the next five days.
