The Dhaka University unit of Biplobi Chhatra Maitri submitted a written complaint to the administration seeking justice for female teachers and students who have recently fallen victim to online cyberbullying and harassment.
The complaint stated that a Facebook group named Dhaka University Shikkharthi Sangsad has turned into a platform for making derogatory comments and character assassinations against female teachers and students.
The group allegedly carried obscene remarks targeting Dr Samina Luthfa, a faculty member of the Department of Sociology.
It was also mentioned that DU student Faria Matin has been subjected to widespread cyberbullying recently.
The complaint included the names of several individuals allegedly involved in the bullying and offensive comments. They are – Md Sakibur Rahman, Simanto Hossain Nimu, Saidur Rahman Sajib and Islam Monir.
The complainants said, “It is imperative for the university administration to take prompt measures to ensure the online safety of female teachers and students and to curb cyberbullying.”
They further mentioned that Facebook posts, comments, and other evidence against the accused have been submitted to the administration.
The complainants demanded immediate punitive action against those involved after a proper investigation.
Meanwhile, on Monday, DU teacher and assistant proctor Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan Monami filed a case under the Cyber Security Act with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing some individuals of distorting her photos and posting them on Facebook with indecent comments.
