Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) concluded its four-day celebration marking the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore on Monday with a staging of the play ‘Achalayatan’ by theatre troupe Prachyanat at the National Theatre Hall.
The nationwide celebration began on May 8, with programmes organised at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and all 64 district Shilpakala Academies across the country.
The four-day festival featured Rabindra Sangeet, dance, recitation and theatre performances alongside a 14-day art exhibition titled ‘Robir Chitro, Chitrer Robi’. The exhibition includes 95 artworks, among them 45 replicas of paintings created by Tagore and 50 artworks by renowned Bangladeshi artists inspired by the poet.
The exhibition, organised by the academy’s Fine Arts Department, will continue until May 23 and remains open to visitors daily from 11 am to 8 pm.
On Monday, the closing ceremony began at 6 pm at the National Theatre Hall.
Political and Industries Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Ruhul Kabir Rizvi attended the event as chief guest. BSA Director General and poet Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, also known as Rezauddin Stalin, was present at the programme.
The event was presided over by Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Kaniz Mowla.
Following the discussion session, Prachyanat staged Tagore’s play ‘Achalayatan’, directed by Azad Abul Kalam. The production highlighted the triumph of free thinking and humanity over conservatism and blind faith, which remains the central message of the play.
Earlier during the celebration, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said Tagore’s works continued to inspire Bangladesh’s cultural identity and democratic values.
The cultural programmes also featured performances by students of Jagannath University, the Government Music College and Rabindra University, alongside noted singers, dancers and recitation artistes.
All programmes organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy were open to all visitors and also broadcast live on the academy’s verified Facebook page and YouTube channel.
