Chattogram district administration has ordered the preparation of eight emergency shelters in four city areas amid risks of landslides, flooding and waterlogging caused by continuous heavy rainfall.
District Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia issued the order on Tuesday, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards, triggering forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the country’s southeastern region.
The order said the adverse weather conditions had increased the risk of landslides in hilly areas and flooding in low-lying parts of Chattogram. The designated shelters are located at eight educational institutions across four circles of the city.
Under Chandgaon Circle, Al-Hera Madrasa and Rashidia Madrasa have been selected as shelters.
In Agrabad Circle, YWCA Community School and Imrul Quran Muhibbia Deenia Orphanage have been designated for emergency use.
Firozshah Government Primary School and B Block Government Primary School have been selected under Kattoli Circle, while Lalkhan Bazar Government Primary School and Shahid Nagar City Corporation Girls’ High School have been designated under Bakalia Circle.
Officials have been instructed to evacuate residents to the shelters immediately if the situation worsens.
Earlier, the district administration conducted awareness campaigns through loudspeaker announcements, urging people living on hill slopes and at the foothills to move to safer locations to avoid landslide risks.
