Concerned over cracks appearing in various parts of the National Parliament building, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has instructed Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher to take swift necessary action, parliament was told on Monday.
The issue was raised by Sherpur-1 MP Md Rashedul Islam Rashed during the session through a notice regarding breach of privilege.
In his notice, the MP stated that cracks have been observed in various parts of the parliament building, and rainwater leakage through the roof and other sections has also been noticed.
“These infrastructural defects are concerning for the safety, functionality, and dignity of the parliament building,” the notice read, adding that preserving the infrastructural safety and functionality of the country’s highest law-making institution is an important state responsibility.
The Speaker highlighted the importance of the matter while informing parliament about the notice. “The issue raised by the MP is extremely important. Therefore, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works is being requested to take swift necessary action,” he said.
However, the Speaker noted that since the matter is related to the Parliament Secretariat, the notice cannot be accepted as a question of breach of privilege under Rule 54(3) of the Rules of Procedure.
