A Gazipur court on Monday evening cancelled an earlier order placing July activist Tahrima Jannat Suravi on a two-day remand in an abduction case and granted her interim bail.
Earlier in the day, Gazipur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 Judge Syed Fazlul Mahdi had approved the two-day remand after hearing a police application.
Following the order, leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a section of the NCP gathered on the court premises and chanted slogans, creating a tense situation for a brief period.
Additional police were deployed to maintain order.
In the evening, Suravi’s lawyers filed a review petition. After hearing the plea, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate-1 Amit Guha revoked the remand order and granted Suravi four weeks of interim bail.
According to investigating officer Omar Faruk, Suravi was arrested on 25 December during a joint forces operation as a warrant-listed accused.
She faces allegations of making offensive and provocative remarks on social media about a government adviser and the army chief, along with charges related to the harassment and abduction of a journalist.
The case statement said that on 18 November, 2025, Daily Bangladesh Pratidin multimedia reporter Naimur Rahman Durjoy was allegedly lured to Gazipur on the pretext of receiving important information.
He was later abducted, assaulted, and robbed of his motorcycle and mobile phone, while Tk 5 lakh was demanded as ransom. The accused are also alleged to have withdrawn money from his bKash account and forced him to give a confession after recording photos and videos under threat.
Police said Durjoy subsequently filed a case with Kaliakair Police Station. As part of the investigation, Suravi was arrested late on 25 December from her residence in the Tekpara area of Gopalpur under Tongi East Police Station. She is the daughter of Selim Mia of the same area.
