A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the seizure of several immovable properties belonging to former Awami League lawmaker from the Manikganj-2 constituency Momtaz Begum amid ongoing investigations into corruption and money laundering allegations against her.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez passed the order following a petition filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Mohammad Sirajul Islam.
The development was confirmed by court bench assistant Riaz Hossain.
According to the court order, the seized assets include a five-storey house in Mohakhali DOHS in the capital, two two-storey houses in Singair upazila of Manikganj, a four-storey house in Manikganj Sadar, and a nine-katha plot in Purbachal.
The order also covers additional land holdings, including five decimals in Manikganj, seven decimals in Singair, and another 412.51 decimals of land in a separate location in Singair.
Court records show that, excluding a two-storey ancestral house in Manikganj, the total declared value of the seized properties stands at Tk11.81 crore.
In the petition, the ACC said it is conducting an inquiry into allegations of money laundering involving Momtaz Begum as well as other individuals and entities associated with her.
The commission argued that seizing the assets was necessary to prevent their transfer or disposal while the investigation remains underway.
Momtaz Begum was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) from the capital’s Dhanmondi area late on May 13 last year.
She was subsequently shown arrested in multiple cases, placed on remand, and has remained in custody since.
