A Dhaka court on Saturday sent content creator AM Hasan Nasim to jail in a case filed over allegations of spreading misleading information on social media about the chief whip of Parliament.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibullah Piyas passed the order after the investigating officer, SI Rayhanur Rahman, requested a seven-day remand.
The court rejected the remand request alongside a bail petition submitted by defence lawyer Zahirul Islam, fixing Sunday for the next bail hearing.
Nasim, a resident of Barguna and admin of the ‘Patharghata.com’ Facebook page, was apprehended on Friday night in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
According to the case statement, the accused posted a satirical status on 11 April regarding Barguna-2 MP and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, claiming the Chief Whip had brought “3 whales” from the sea with “2 sharks” on the way.
The complainant, Md Nazrul Islam, alleged that screenshots were also sent to the Chief Whip’s personal WhatsApp number in a blackmail attempt. The case was filed at Gulshan Police Station under the Cyber Security Act.
On the court premises, Nasim maintained his innocence and alleged he had been subjected to physical torture while in Detective Branch custody.
