Australia beat Bangladesh by four wickets in the first T20I at the Bir Shrestho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.

The visitors chased 132 in 18.2 overs and took a 1-0 lead in the three match series.

Bangladesh chose to bat first but failed to build a strong total. The hosts were bowled out for 131 in 19 overs.

Saif Hassan gave Bangladesh some early runs. Mahedi Hasan fought late with 29* off 22 balls. But the rest of the batting failed. No other batter reached 20.

Australia used spin well on a slow surface. Adam Zampa and debutant Joel Davies led the attack. They shared six wickets between them.

Matthew Renshaw also picked up two wickets. Spencer Johnson and Nikhil Chaudhary took one each.

Australia also had a shaky start in the chase. Shoriful Islam bowled Josh Inglis early. Mustafizur Rahman then removed captain Mitchell Marsh inside the powerplay.

But Cooper Connolly kept Australia ahead. The left hander played a quick 47 off 27 balls. He struck clean boundaries and took pressure away from the chase.

Tim David gave him strong support with 20 runs. Their stand pushed Australia close to victory.

Bangladesh kept fighting with the ball. Mahedi dismissed David. Abdul Gaffar Saqlain removed Connolly and later got Matt Renshaw.

Rishad Hossain also struck late when he dismissed Nikhil Chaudhary caught behind.

But Bangladesh did not have enough runs to defend. Joel Davies stayed calm near the end. Xavier Bartlett then finished the match with a four through extra cover.

Australia reached 133 for six with 10 balls left.

The win gave Australia a strong start after losing the ODI series 2-1. Bangladesh will need a quick response in the second T20I to stay alive in the series.
