The Bangladesh Coast Guard has successfully rescued six fishermen who were being held hostage by the notorious ‘Nana Bhai’ pirate gang in the Sundarbans
Bangladesh Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed the development on Tuesday afternoon.
He said the fishermen had gone to the Sundarbans on 7 March to catch fish and crabs when members of the gang abducted them and held them hostage, subjecting them to torture for ransom.
Later, a man named Md Kabir informed the Coast Guard through its emergency hotline 16111 that his brother had been held captive for 10 days and that ransom was being demanded.
Based on the information, Coast Guard personnel carried out a special operation at around 5am on Tuesday in the Kali Khal area adjacent to the Shibsa River under Nalian outpost in the Sundarbans.
During the operation, six fishermen were rescued from captivity.
Sensing the presence of Coast Guard personnel, the pirates fled into the forest, leaving the hostages behind. No arrests were made.
The rescued fishermen were identified as Rafiqul, Alamin and Ismail Shana from Koyra police station in Khulna, and Ramzan Ali, Rezwan and Mia Raj from Shyamnagar police station in Satkhira.
The process of handing them over to their families is underway.
