The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the North Division of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), Amirul Islam, has been transferred while an investigation continues into the alleged harassment of Bangladesh national cricket team spinner Nayeem Hasan at Khulshi Police Station.
A departmental order issued on Friday night confirmed the transfer.
Police sources said it was around midnight when DC Amirul Islam was engaged in an operation in the Bahaddarhat area of Chattogram city. During the operation, he learned from colleagues that he had been moved from his current post.
According to the order signed by CMP Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali, Amirul Islam has been attached to the Welfare and Force Division.
DC Hasan Mostafa Swapan of the Welfare and Force Division has been appointed as the new DC of the North Division.
In the same order, Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch (North) Md Habibur Rahman Pramanik has been made DC of the South Division.
Several CMP officials said routine reshuffles have been ongoing across different units of the city police in recent days. They said the latest transfer is part of that process. However, the authorities have not confirmed whether any specific reason is linked to the move.
When contacted, Amirul Islam said he had tried his best to serve the country and the public over the past year. He said he prioritised law and order, crime control and public service during his tenure. He added that any shortcomings were unintentional and said he would continue to serve with dedication in his new posting.
The transfer comes at a time when the alleged harassment of cricketer Nayeem Hasan at Khulshi Police Station has triggered widespread discussion and criticism.
