A massive landslide struck southwest China’s Chongqing municipality on Friday morning, burying several residential buildings and trapping an unspecified number of residents.
According to reports from the state broadcaster CCTV, the disaster occurred at approximately 9:08 am in Pengshui County, reports AP UNB.
While search and rescue operations remain ongoing, at least eight individuals have already been successfully pulled from the debris.
Footage aired by the broadcaster depicted a section of a mountainside collapsing directly onto a residential zone.
Emergency workers were seen searching through the rubble for survivors in an area where several buildings still stood in close proximity to the site of the collapse.
Pengshui County is located in the southeastern region of Chongqing, bordering the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou. Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate those who remain missing.
