We often credit fathers when a child shows remarkable talent or intelligence. But science suggests mothers may deserve more applause, especially when it comes to those impressive grades.
Recent research from the University of Cambridge, supported by multiple studies in genetics and neuroscience, indicates that intelligence is largely inherited from mothers. The reason lies in the X chromosome, which carries many genes linked to cognitive abilities. Since women have two X chromosomes while men have only one, children are more likely to inherit these intelligence-related genes from their mothers.
Yet genetics is only part of the story. Maternal influence goes far beyond biology. The way mothers communicate, nurture and encourage their children can profoundly shape both intellectual and emotional growth. A mother’s guidance, curiosity and engagement help children develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and creativity.
Fathers, of course, play a vital role too. Care, communication and support from both parents are essential for healthy development. Beyond family, environment and education also shape a child’s intelligence.
Still, the next time your mom tells you to read a little more or think a little deeper, remember- she isn’t just passing down her wisdom, but also her genetics.
