Rail connectivity between Chattogram and the rest of the country was restored on Wednesday night following a two-hour suspension caused by an engine failure and a derailment in Nangalkot Upazila.
Train operations resumed at approximately 10pm, as confirmed by Md Omar Faruque, the Station Master of Laksam Railway Junction.
According to railway sources, the disruption began at 7:30pm when the Chattogram-bound Sonar Bangla Express suffered an engine failure on the “up” line near Hasanpur station, shortly after passing Gunabati.
At approximately 8pm, four carriages of the Chandpur-bound Meghna Express, which had departed from Chattogram, derailed after clearing Gunabati station.
The dual incidents led to a complete cessation of train movements on both the “up” and “down” lines of the Dhaka-Chattogram route, resulting in significant distress for passengers stranded at various stations.
Station Master Md Omar Faruque stated that a rescue train was dispatched to the site and an alternative engine was mobilised to clear the tracks.
Railway authorities noted that the situation was normalised within two hours due to prompt measures taken to remove the derailed carriages and the disabled engine.
