Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that a certain quarter is systematically conspiring to disrupt the nation’s democratic process.

Speaking at a memorial meeting held at the National Press Club on Friday, he stated that while the 2024 mass uprising provided an opportunity for the country to return to a democratic path, a planned initiative to hinder that process is now visible.

According to Fakhrul, democracy is once again facing a crisis as a group deliberately attempts to create anarchy across the country.

The discussion was organised to observe the 52nd death anniversary of Mahbubul Huq, an elected member of the 1962 National Assembly, and the 12th death anniversary of Mahbubul Alam Tara, the former president of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal.

During his address, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the negative impact of social media, claiming it is leading national politics toward a “terrible consequence.”

He alleged that there is an active effort to engage in the character assassination of political leaders to present them negatively to the public. Such conspiracies, he argued, serve as an “ominous sign” for a healthy political culture and are intended to destroy politics altogether.

Fakhrul further noted that conspirators are using language that damages political etiquette and the natural development of political discourse. He pointed out that since July 2024, certain political forces have been working to obstruct the practice of democracy.

While he described the formation of a government through democratic elections as a positive move, he stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to identify these conspiracies quickly to ensure continued democratic progress.

Elaborating on the BNP’s political philosophy, Fakhrul clarified that the BNP is a liberal democratic political party rather than a revolutionary one. He stated that the party’s objective is to achieve its goals through movements involving the general public and to take the responsibility of running the state through elections.

BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu also spoke at the event, noting that the country is facing multifaceted conspiracies and propaganda. He condemned the use of indecent language and the spreading of slanders against BNP leaders on social media.

Despite these challenges, Dudu asserted that the public remains supportive of both the BNP and the current government, while urging party activists to remain vigilant.

The meeting was attended by various leaders from the BNP and its associate organisations.
