Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin warned that strict measures will be taken to enforce the code of conduct ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election. He also asked the political parties to remove campaign posters that violate election rules.
“We see Dhaka covered in posters, even though posters have been banned in the code of conduct,” he made the remarks while addressing the Commission’s views-exchange with six political parties, held on Thursday morning.
“These posters must be removed voluntarily. If not, we will not spare anyone. Once the schedule is announced, we will launch a full operation. So I request you to remove the posters before the schedule is declared.”
The six invitees for the morning session are Liberal Democratic Party-LDP, Bangladesh Congress, Bangladesh Muslim League, National People’s Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan and Jamiyate Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh.
The CEC emphasised that the Election Commission intends to act as a neutral referee and that the integrity of the election depends on the cooperation of political parties. “You are the players, and we are in the role of referees,” he said.
“Without your cooperation, it is very difficult to act as a referee and to conduct the game properly. We are committed to giving the nation a fair, acceptable election — but this can only be delivered with your support.”
He stressed that all 54 registered parties will be treated equally. “There is no big or small — all registered parties are equal to us. We do not measure size. Everyone is equal in our eyes.”
The CEC noted several additional responsibilities facing the Commission, including arrangements for out-of-country voting, ensuring voting facilities for those on election duty, and the possibility of a referendum.
“This election is already taking place under a special situation, under a special government,” he said. “Many extra burdens have fallen on our shoulders that previous Commissions did not have.”
Calling the misuse of social media a growing challenge, he said, “The misuse of AI and the spread of bogus content did not exist before. We are having to fight on many fronts. We cannot do it without your cooperation.”
He concluded by urging political parties to support the Commission in ensuring a smooth, peaceful and credible election.
