According to the police and Fire Service, four friends travelled to Belkuchi area of Sirajganj on Sunday afternoon.
After lunch at a hotel, they went into Jamuna River to bathe.
Around 2:30pm, Jisan stepped onto a patch of sand and began sinking. His friend, Mahin Hasan, tried to rescue him and held his hand for nearly two minutes.
However, Jisan eventually slipped from his grasp and sank into the river.
Following the information, personnel from the Fire Service, River Police and Enayetpur Police Station launched a joint search-and-rescue operation that continued into Sunday night.
On Monday morning, divers from Rajshahi located his body in deep water approximately 100 metres from the riverbank.
Recounting the incident, Mahin said, “The four of us came from Dhaka for a visit. After finishing our meal at the hotel, we went into the river to bathe. None of us knew how to swim well. We were playing by splashing mud in the river. Where Jisan stepped, the sand was soft. As soon as he stepped, he sank. I held him for about two minutes. Later, he slipped from my hands and went deep into the river. After that, he could not be found”.
Belkuchi Fire Service Station Officer Shahidur Rahman said the rescue operation began at 2:30pm on Sunday, continued through the night and concluded when the body was retrieved around 9:30am on Monday.
