Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has raised questions about the ongoing discussions regarding the “Shapla” symbol.
Speaking to journalists at the Election Commission (EC) office in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Thursday, Nasir Uddin pointed out that when the symbol was first requested by Mahmudur Rahman Manna of Nagarik Oikya, there was not as much discussion.
He then asked, “Why is there so much discussion about Shapla now? Initially, the registered political party Nagarik Oikya requested the Shapla symbol. They met us, and we decided that the symbol could not be granted.
“But now, I see a lot of discussion about Shapla symbol. Our senior secretary has already briefed the matter several times. I do not wish to make any further comments on this.”
When asked about potential changes to the regulations, he said the commission would determine the next steps after discussions. No decision has been made yet.
“Political parties are our key stakeholders, and they may send us letters. We will discuss and make decisions in the commission’s meeting,” Nasir Uddin added.
Regarding the timing of the February elections, the CEC stated, “We are making all the necessary preparations to hold the elections in the first half of February.”
In response to questions about confusion and concerns from political parties regarding polls, the CEC commented, “Political parties are our key stakeholders, and without their cooperation, a fair election is not possible.
“Some time ago, the editor of a newspaper made a comment I really liked. If all players enter the field with the intention of committing fouls, then the referee cannot prevent the match from being ruined.”
Therefore, players must avoid entering the field with an intention to foul. But we will take all necessary measures to prevent fouls.”
On the issue of the electoral process and proportional representation (PR) system, the CEC stated, “We will organise the elections in accordance with the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and the Constitution.”
Regarding the dialogue with the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance, the CEC stated, “I have received five proposals from the Jatiya Party. I am not sure which Jatiya Party you are referring to.
“There are several claimants to the “Plow” symbol. The decision on whether they will be invited to the dialogue has not yet been made. Initially, we will engage with the civil society, various organisations, and media personalities.”
