A murder case has finally been filed over the killing of self-proclaimed pir Abdus Rahman Shamim Jahangir, 65 in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.
The case was lodged with Daulatpur Police Station shortly after midnight on Monday, nearly 55 hours after the killing. The victim’s brother Fazlur Rahman filed the case as the complainant. Two other brothers of the deceased were also present during the filing. However, no one was arrested or detained until the report was filed at night.
Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police (Bheramara Circle) Delwar Hossain said “The case named four individuals, along with 180–200 unidentified people as accused.”
He added that the victim’s family had initially shown reluctance to file the case, saying it could create further complications.
Earlier, on Saturday afternoon, Shamim Jahangir was killed in a mob attack at his residence in Philipnagar of Daulatpur upazila after an old video of alleged derogatory remarks about Islam spread on social media.
He was attacked by hundreds of people. Three of his followers were also injured in the incident. The residence was vandalised in multiple rounds of attacks and set on fire. Allegations of looting valuable belongings were also raised.
