A case has been filed with Ashulia Police Station over the attempted rape of a female student on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus late Tuesday night.
The incident took place around 11pm near Old Fazilatunnesa Hall and the extension area of Al-Beruni Hall, university sources said.
The victim is a student of the 2021-22 academic session.
According to university security officials, the student was walking along a campus road when an unidentified man began following her. At one stage, the attacker allegedly wrapped a net-like object around her neck and tried to drag her into nearby bushes in a secluded area.
Her screams alerted several students who were passing the area on a motorcycle. Safiqul Islam, a student of the Bengali Department from the 43rd batch, said they rushed to the spot after hearing cries for help and found the student in a terrified condition.
The attacker fled the scene after the students arrived.
Students later informed the university security wing and members of the proctorial body went to the scene.
Jahangirnagar University Deputy Registrar of Security Branch Md Jefrul Hasan Chowdhury said he filed the case with Ashulia Police Station on Wednesday morning as the complainant on charges of attempted rape and attempted murder.
University authorities conducted a search operation immediately after the incident and collected CCTV footage from the area. Jahangirnagar University Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said the suspect’s face was clearly visible in the footage and the administration believes he is not a university student.
Deputy Registrar Md Jefrul Hasan Chowdhury said footage analysis showed the suspect forcibly taking the student towards the bushes and one suspect has already been initially identified.
Attempts to contact Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rubel Howlader for comments on the investigation were unsuccessful.
