Bangladesh began their Asian Cup qualifying camp on 29 September with 20 players reporting on the opening day, though six Mohammedan footballers are yet to join. The spotlight, however, fell on US-based defender Zayyan Ahmed, as coach Javier Cabrera confirmed he wants to “properly test” the 21-year-old during training.
Zayyan, who impressed in the U-23 side earlier this year, received his first senior call-up and will be closely observed in camp. Cabrera explained his decision:
“We want to see Zayyan’s profile, how he fits into the national team. He performed well for the U-23s and plays in a position where we believe he can give us something extra. That’s why I’m positive about him.”
Captain Jamal Bhuiyan also welcomed the newcomer, saying Zayyan’s arrival would “increase competition within the team.”
The coach also addressed the absence of Sunderland-born Cuba Mitchell, who now plays for Bashundhara Kings. Once a much-discussed expatriate option, Mitchell was overlooked for this squad. Cabrera clarified:
“I am positive about Cuba’s talent and ability, but he needs more time. He didn’t get much playing opportunity in the U-23s and is still adapting. I’ve stayed in touch with him, and we’re positive about his future, but for now this is not a big problem.”
Long-time national defender Isa Faisal was another omission. Cabrera explained he already knows what Isa can offer, but now wants to assess Zayan.
The other major talking point was Mohammedan’s delay in releasing their six called-up players – Sujon Hossain, Mehedi Hasan Mithu, Zahid Hossain Shanto, Shakil Ahad Topu, Rahmat Mia and Sumon Reza. The club confirmed they will join later, but the late arrivals have disrupted preparations.
Team manager Amer Khan admitted, “We haven’t yet thought of alternatives. Discussions are ongoing with Mohammedan. Training will continue from tomorrow.”
To cover defensive options, Cabrera added Mohammedan’s Zahid Hossain Shanto to the preliminary list, expanding the squad from 28 to 29.
Italy-based Fahmidul Islam will arrive on 30 September, while Hamza Choudhury and Shamit Shome are set to join on 6 and 7 October respectively. Bangladesh face Hong Kong, China on 9 October in Dhaka, before meeting the same side again on 14 October.
Cabrera said the focus is on preparation and seizing opportunities after September’s frustration against Singapore:
“We couldn’t take our chances against Singapore. At home, in front of supporters, we now have another opportunity. A win would give us a big chance.”
