Bangladesh head into Thursday’s AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against Hong Kong, China at the Dhaka National Stadium knowing that anything less than a win could all but end their hopes of progressing.
The reality for Javier Cabrera’s men is stark. With just one point from two matches, Bangladesh sit third in Group C, while Hong Kong occupy second with a win and a draw. Another slip at home would leave Bangladesh struggling to stay in contention.
Cabrera’s squad selection has already raised eyebrows as Zayyan Ahmed, Shamit Shome, and Fahamedul have been left out of the starting line-up, decisions that could invite scrutiny if the result goes wrong. Mitul Marma starts in goal, with a backline featuring Tariq Kazi, Shakil Ahad Topu, Saad Uddin and Taj Uddin. Hamza Choudhury anchors the midfield alongside Sohel Rana, while Sohel Rana Jr, Shekh Morsalin, Rakib Hossain, and Foysal Ahmed Fahim form the attacking unit.
Bangladesh’s main challenge has been consistency. Despite flashes of promise in their previous outings, lapses in concentration and missed chances have cost them dearly. Cabrera has spoken of “belief” and “focus”, but his side’s inability to convert possession into goals remains a concern.
A packed home crowd is at the Dhaka National Stadium, hoping to see something different this time. But against an organised and confident Hong Kong side, Bangladesh will need more than spirit to turn things around.
