The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a set of proposals allowing the implementation of several canal restoration and beautification projects under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) through direct procurement from Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited of the Bangladesh Navy.
The approval came at a committee meeting on Wednesday, where seven separate proposals submitted by the Local Government Division were reviewed and cleared.
The proposals are linked to different work packages under the ongoing “Canal Restoration, Rehabilitation and Beautification Environment Creation (1st Revised)” project being implemented by DSCC.
Officials said the initiative is part of a broader plan to restore and rehabilitate canals in the capital, improve water flow, reduce urban waterlogging, and enhance the city’s overall environment and aesthetics.
The Local Government Division had placed the proposals before the committee seeking policy approval for direct procurement instead of competitive tendering.
Following review, the committee recommended policy approval for all seven work packages.
The canal restoration initiative is a key urban infrastructure project of DSCC aimed at reclaiming encroached and degraded waterways, strengthening drainage capacity, and improving environmental conditions in the capital.
Implementation of the works through the Bangladesh Navy’s Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited is expected to ensure timely completion of the specialised projects under the revised development plan.
