Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) held a protest program titled “Red Card Against Diploma Quota” at the BUET Shaheed Minar at 4pm on Tuesday.
As part of the programme, participants displayed red cards to express their opposition to the diploma technicians’ quota and the longstanding syndicate system in the engineering sector.
Fardin Abrar, a fourth-year BUET student, said, “For years, BSc engineers have faced extreme discrimination in the engineering sector. While a 100% quota has been allocated for diploma technicians in the 10th grade, there is also a 33 per cent promotion quota in the 9th grade for them, which is highly unfair to degree-holding BSc engineers. Today, in 2025, we are once again showing a red card to the quota system and demanding reforms in the engineering sector based on merit and capability.”
Another fourth-year student, Maruf Hossain, added, “Our programme will continue until our three-point demands are met. In this regard, the Engineers’ Rights Movement will hold a divisional grand assembly at Chattogram’s Lal Dighi Maidan on Thursday. We have already successfully held a grand assembly in Rangpur and plan to hold future assemblies in Sylhet, Rajshahi, and ultimately a national assembly in Dhaka.”
