Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have staged a sit-in in front of the administrative building, demanding a reduction in the university’s extra fees.
They also locked the office of Vice-chancellor Professor ABM Badruzzaman during the protest, reports TIMES of Bangladesh photojournalist Shamim-Us-Salehin.
According to the students, BUET’s annual hall fees are several times higher compared to other universities, including Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Dhaka University (DU), Chittagong University (CU), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU).
They pointed out that CUET charges a maximum of Tk7,500, while BUET takes Tk20,000. In addition, the annual hall fee for non-residential students is set at Tk8,500.
On top of this, students are required to pay monthly dining fees and an annual attached hall fee.
The administration has also made it mandatory to pay a monthly dining fine which does not exist at other universities, they said.
