A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student, Shreeshanto Roy, has been detained by police on charges of raping a fellow student.
He was taken into custody on Wednesday morning and brought to Chawkbazar Police Station.
According to circulating screenshots, the accused—an Electrical and Electronic Engineering student of BUET’s 21st batch—allegedly raped a female classmate while she was intoxicated and made vulgar remarks about hijabs and burqas.
The revelations sparked outrage on campus, as hundreds of students gathered in front of the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW) late Tuesday night, demanding his immediate expulsion and a fair trial for the alleged rape.
In response, BUET authorities temporarily suspended Shreeshanto Roy’s studentship. The campus has since remained tense, with students pledging to continue their demonstrations until justice is served.
