Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has shot and critically injured a Bangladeshi youth at the Dhabalsuti border in Patgram, Lalmonirhat.
Teesta Battalion-61 BGB Commanding Officer Lt Col Syed Fazle Munim confirmed the matter. The incident occurred at around 10:30am on Monday. The victim, identified as Md Mizan, 18, has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to local and BGB sources, Mizan had gone to water his paddy field near Border Pillar 826/1-S. A patrol team from 98 BSF Battalion Gomati Camp, positioned within the Gatiarbhita area inside India, fired a round at him.
Mizan sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder and managed to flee back into Bangladeshi territory, where locals rescued him and took him to the hospital.
Shortly after the incident, locals caught an Indian national, identified as Shri Sadhan Barman, along with two cows, and handed him over to the BGB. He is in BGB custody.
Lt Col Fazle Munim said they had called for a battalion commander-level flag meeting. He added that a decision regarding the Indian citizen caught by locals will be made following the flag meeting and the border situation is currently under the control of the BGB.
