Bruno Fernandes made Premier League history as the Manchester United captain broke the record for the most assists in a single season.
Fernandes provided his 21st assist of the league campaign during Manchester United’s final match of the season against Brighton. His set piece found Patrick Dorgu, who headed home the opening goal.
The assist helped Manchester United secure a 3-0 win over Brighton. Dorgu opened the scoring before Bryan Mbeumo added another goal. Fernandes later got his own name on the scoresheet to complete the win.
The Portuguese midfielder moved past the previous record of 20 assists. The mark was set by Thierry Henry and later matched by Kevin De Bruyne.
“It’s great. I feel very happy for that. It’s a very proud moment,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.
“Obviously, it’s not what I was thinking about until I got this close. Today, I was lucky enough to get that.”
“Jonny believed more in me for that set piece that we prepared for Patrick. I wasn’t sure Patrick was able to score with his head. He did, and at the end of the day, I got my assist from that, and I’m very happy.”
“The most important thing is that we won today and we finished strong.”
Fernandes had already matched the record last week in a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest when he set up Mbeumo for United’s third goal.
The 31-year-old also won the Premier League Player of the Season award on Saturday. He had earlier received the FWA Footballer of the Year award.
Earlier this season, Fernandes also broke the Manchester United record for most assists in a Premier League season. He passed the previous mark of 15 set by David Beckham.
He still remains behind the overall Premier League assist record of 162 held by former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs.
