Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning defender Brito has died at the age of 86, the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed on Thursday, just two days before Brazil begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Morocco.
Brito played 61 matches for Brazil between 1964 and 1972. He featured at the 1966 World Cup and later became part of the Brazil side that won the 1970 tournament in Mexico, widely regarded as one of the strongest teams in football history.
The centre-back built a strong defensive partnership with Wilson Piazza during his international career. Brazil also won the Copa Roca in 1971 and the Taça Independência in 1972 with Brito in the squad.
Brazilian Football Confederation president Samir Xaud said: “Brito left us as one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian football. His contribution to the 1970 World Cup victory will be eternally remembered by all of us.”
Xaud also linked Brito’s death with Brazil’s latest attempt to win a sixth World Cup title in North America.
“I pay my respects to this idol of our country,” Xaud said. “May his fighting spirit be an inspiration to our players who will compete in the World Cup.”
Brazil open their Group campaign against Morocco on Saturday. The five-time world champions arrive at the tournament chasing their first World Cup title since 2002.
Brito formed part of a generation that helped establish Brazil as the dominant force in international football. The 1970 side, led by Pelé, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto, became the first team to win the World Cup three times.
