Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu on Monday announced a Tk10 lakh grant for the development of Rajshahi University (RU) and said steps would be taken to hand over Boro Kuthi, the institution’s historic birthplace to the university authorities.

He made the announcement while addressing a discussion marking the university’s 73rd founding anniversary as chief guest.

Announcing the financial support, the minister said, “In the name of my father, Faizur Rahman, I will donate Tk10 lakh for the development of Rajshahi University within a week.”

He said Rajshahi University had played a significant role in the country’s anti-fascist movements and democratic struggles.

“Many graduates of this university are now serving with distinction across the world. I pay my respects to the late Madar Bakhsh, who made the greatest contribution to the establishment of the university, and express gratitude to all those involved in its founding,” he said.

The minister said the Vice-Chancellor had placed several development demands before him, adding that he had long been a supporter of the institution.

He further said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Education Minister were also committed to the development of the university.

“I hope all existing challenges, including those related to residential halls and academic buildings, will be resolved soon. I will raise these issues with the Prime Minister at the earliest opportunity,” he added.

Referring to the university’s upcoming milestone, Minu said, “The university will celebrate its 75th founding anniversary in two years. I will invite Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend, and I hope he will be present.”

He also noted that the Vice-Chancellor had requested government intervention to reclaim Boro Kuthi for the university.

“I will place this matter, along with issues relating to halls, academic buildings and other development needs, before the Prime Minister,” he said.
