Actress and presenter Masuma Rahman Nabila has said that the character Bonolota Sen is “a question” as she prepares for her return to the big screen this Eid with the film Bonolata Sen, directed by Masud Hasan Ujjal.
Nabila, known for her selective approach to acting, has previously appeared in films including ‘Aynabaji’ and ‘Toofan’, where her performances drew attention for both her acting and screen presence. In her latest project, she takes on a central role in a film inspired by the celebrated literary work of poet Jibanananda Das.
The film is built around a classical sense of mystery, with Nabila describing the character of Bonolata Sen as deeply complex. “Bonolata Sen is a question,” she said, reflecting on how different audiences hold different interpretations of the iconic figure.
The journey to the role was not straightforward. According to Nabila, director Masud Hasan Ujjal initially offered her a different character. After reading the script, she expressed interest in the role of Bonolota Sen instead, telling the director that she would have immediately agreed had it been offered to her directly. She later went through three auditions before finally being selected for the part.
She noted that portraying Bonolota Sen on screen was a major challenge due to the varied imaginations readers hold about the literary character. The film attempts to capture both the mystery and the poetic vision behind the original work, she added.
Nabila also described director Ujjwal’s filmmaking style as expansive and poetic. The film features Khairul Bashar in the role of the poet, with Sohel Mondol playing another significant character.
Although the film was completed around two and a half years ago, its release was delayed due to technical and other complications. Nabila said the team recently viewed the final version and was impressed, adding that she herself encouraged the director to release it sooner.
Nabila believes audiences are now ready for diverse cinematic experiences and considers Eid the ideal time for the film’s release.
Outside cinema, Nabila is currently hosting the cooking-based programme ‘Star Ship Fusion Kitchen’ on Channel i.
Since her marriage in 2018, she has been balancing her professional work with family life.
