Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati was ruled out for an extended period on Sunday after the Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed she had fractured her left fibula during a training session at Las Rozas, Madrid.
The 27 year old fell awkwardly during a morning practice as Spain prepared for the second leg of their Uefa Women’s Nations League final against Germany, scheduled to be played at the Estadio Metropolitano on 2 December. Bonmati had featured for 77 minutes in the goalless first leg in Kaiserslautern on Friday.
In a statement, the federation said that “following tests carried out by the medical services” Bonmati had been “diagnosed with a fracture in her left fibula”. She will return to Barcelona to begin her rehabilitation.
The setback brings a premature halt to what has been an exceptional year for the midfielder, who became the first player to win the women’s Ballon d’Or three times. She also helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble and reached the Euro 2025 final with Spain. Uefa named her the Champions League’s player of the season, underscoring a campaign of sustained excellence that now ends in frustration.
